Sweetgum roots are very vigorous, but do not usually prevent a problem for the foundation. That said, no trees should be planted very close to the house for numerous reasons. The downside of sweetgum is that the roots are highly water seeking and will cause problems too close to a septic system, even breaking the pipe lines at times.
