Spraying rules for the general public citizens

Asked August 7, 2019, 1:49 PM EDT

How can we find out the rules on spraying fruit trees, we live near orchards and would like to be informed when the spraying is happening near our house. We just consider this a common courtesy since our property is adjoining other orchards being sprayed.

The rules covering pesticide application are product specific and they can be found on the product label. The best way to find out what products are being used is to ask the farmer for the brand name and formulation. Then, you can look up the label for that product/formulation to see what the application instructions are. A good site for looking up pesticide labels is CDMS.net (http://www.cdms.net/Label-Database). The law says that pesticides must be used according to the label directions, so if they are not following the directions, then they are in violation of the law. In Michigan, you can report cases of pesticide drift or illegal use of pesticides to the
Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (1-800-292-3939). Another good resource about pesticide regulations and toxicity is the National Pesticide Information Center (http://npic.orst.edu/). For information that may be more relevant to your local area, I would recommend reaching out to your local MSU Extension office in Grand Traverse County (231-922-4620).
