Wildflower area

Asked August 6, 2019, 11:33 AM EDT

I want to turn a 4ft. x 50ft. section of my lawn, where it meets a small wooded area, into a wildflower area. I've read that if I set my mower blade to its lowest cutting height I can mow the area, rake up the cuttings and sow the wildflower seed. If this is possible, should I sow the seed early fall or spring. Thank you for any advice. I would rather not have to dig up the lawn if possible.

In our experience, you will need to remove the grass. Please read the following page on our website. It was written by someone who has actual experience creating meadows in Maryland. She recommends purchasing plugs instead of starting from seed.
