Green bug

What is the strange bug that is chewing holes in my tomato plants this year I've never seen them before

I had to "phone a friend" to answer this one. It is a tortoise beetle larva (or pupa). They use their own feces to create a shield that they hold over their back, which protects them from predators. You can see the shield clearly in the first picture; it is the shiny black object. Tortoise beetles are in the insect order Coleoptera, family Chrysomelidae.
