mis kim lilac

I planted a mis kim lilac 2 months ago. It has small white dots on most of the stems of the plant. Is this normal?

Hi. Yes, that is quite normal for that shrub. Here is a nice, succinct fact sheet from the U. of Wisconsin on that particular cultivar of lilac. Under the description of the bark, you will see that it says “warty with lenticels.” What you are seeing are those lenticels, which are pores that permit gas exchange. Here is a brief comment about them from Iowa State U. that you might find interesting. You will see this same feature in some other shrubs, including forsythia, which is another member of the olive family (Oleaceae).
