Old clay crock food safety test

I have a very old brown glaze crock, probably made from red clay, that I would like to use to make pickles. How can I test it for food safety? Dianne Swan, Thank you

Thanks for contacting Ask the Expert. I am going to assume that the glaze on the crock does not have any cracks in it, correct? If there are cracks present, there is no need to test the crock for lead because there already exists a potential food safety risk. If the glaze is smooth, you can test the outside of the crock for lead by purchasing a test kit at a hardware store. I hope this answers your question. Glad you asked.
