What kind of fir is this?

Asked August 2, 2019, 7:49 AM EDT

I was near Pictured Rocks shoreline and saw the tree in this photo. It's the one in the center with the cones. The cones appear upright for the most part and black. I think it's a fir tree.

It is some type of fir tree. I can’t identity from your photo. We would need high resolution pictures of the cones and foliage. My best guess is balsam fir since it is in the Upper Peninsula.

Looking at other photos on the internet of balsam fir, that is indeed what I believe it is. Thanks for your help.
