Excessive tree sap

Asked August 1, 2019, 7:04 AM EDT

How do I treat a Ponderosa pine in my backyard that has massive amounts of sap coming out of the tree? I suspect it has been infested by insects. Do I need to get the tree cut done? I can’t deal with the sap all over the back patio area. Thanks for your help Peggy

Hi Peggy, There are a couple of reasons why you might have a lot of sap coming from your trees. A photo of the tree would be helpful in my determining what might be causing it, if you are able to take one and send it over. The most likely cause is the tree responding to the Sequoia Pitch Moth. This is a common pest here, that usually does not kill the tree but the sap can be a nuisance. Unfortunately there is no practical management for this pest on large trees. Here is a link to some additional information and feel free to call me with some follow-up questions.https://pnwhandbooks.org/insect/hort/landscape/hosts-pests-landscape-plants/douglas-fir-pseudotsuga-pitch-moth Pesticides are not real effective in managing this pest.
