Cut flowers

Asked July 31, 2019, 3:35 PM EDT

Do you have a list of good flowers for bouquets for our area (Corvallis)? I grow lots of perennials but many of them (penstemon, salvia, etc) do not last long as cut flowers. My favorites right now are gladiolas and dahlias, but I'd like suggestions so I can plant more perennials next year that will look good and last longer in vases.

Great inquiry!

One of our Master Gardeners is experimenting with cut flowers in her Corvallis garden and we can get some lovely ideas from a picture of her bouquets, attached.

I'm seeing the following:
  • Sunflower
  • Marigold
  • Zinnia
  • Statice
  • Calendula
  • Snapdragon
  • Cosmos
Page 2 of this publication for flower farmers in Washington has a list of species that should also be suitable for the Willamette Valley: http://cru.cahe.wsu.edu/cepublications/eb1982/eb1982.pdf

Here's a resource for flowers that dry well for arrangements that last all year. This one isn't for our region but many of the species grow here: https://extension2.missouri.edu/g6540

If you have room for shurbs, don't overlook flowering options like hydrangea, lilac, forsythia, ornamental quince and the like.

Finally, there are several local seed companies that specialize in flowers, you might check out their offerings for ideas.
