Need ID for weed

Asked July 31, 2019, 12:03 AM EDT

Can you help us by identifying this new noxious weed? It has spread through our barnyard and is beginning to move to our lower field. The stem is very stiff and is purple. I have been unable to accurately ID it. Sure appreciate the help!

Greetings,

Thank you for reaching out to Extension. Where are you located? The best way to confirm identification is to have you bring a plant sample into your local extension office, photos can be misleading. The Benton County Extension Office is located at 4077 SW Research Way, Corvallis OR. The sample should include as much of the plant as you can manage to pull up, including leaves and flowers when viable. If you find plants in different stages of growth then please bring those in. Here are some additional considerations when collecting the sample:

  • Protect yourself and wear gloves when collecting, as some plants can be toxic.
  • Avoid collecting plants that have been previously cut or damaged. These injuries can alter growth and make them more difficult to identify.
  • Bring plants in while they are still fresh. wilted samples become exceedingly more difficult to identify as they deteriorate.

Feel free to contact me directly if you are unable to bring in a sample.

Warm Regards,
