Plant deterrent

Asked July 30, 2019, 7:58 PM EDT

Do you have any recommendations for plants to plant to deter deer and rabbits? They have been targeting our hostas and sunflower plants. Rabbits have been in the green beans too. Would prefer a plant deterrent instead of a chemical spray. Thanks

There are no easy answers for wildlife issues. There are no effective plant deterrents. Rabbits tend to avoid strongly scented herbs like oregano, rosemary, sage, and basil and possibly marigolds but they will not protect your favorite plants.
If hungry enough, they will eat anything. You may need to use a combination of techniques like fencing and resistant plants.

Fencing is the only way to eliminate damage especially for vegetables. Here is more information on deer resistant plants and fencing. https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/deer

Rabbits - simple 2-foot chicken wire fence will be the best deterrent. However, the bottom of the fence must be secured to the ground or buried a few inches in the ground. Also, see rabbit resistant plants.
