Red Growth/Thing/Fungus/Eggs attached to leaves

Asked July 30, 2019, 2:56 PM EDT

We are trying to figure out what these red things are on the leaves of this, what we think is a willow of some sort. we just moved onto the property and at first I thought these were berries, but they are attached, growing out of the leaves themselves. When I break them open they are fleshy. Thanks for your time and expertise. Tammy Moody

Deschutes County Oregon galls willow

Hi Tammy, from the photo it appears that these are galls caused by an insect of some sort. The insect could be a wasp, an aphid or even something else but it is really not harmful to the shrub. I am attaching a link to photos of similar galls on willows in California as a comparison and to show you what type of insect might do this here. It may not be the same species but likely the same type of insect.
