Inheriting a garden...please help!

Asked July 29, 2019, 3:11 PM EDT

Hi there!

My husband and I bought a house with a small vegetable garden and a few fruit trees. Having no previous experience, I am looking for a good place to start learning the basics. I want to make sure to treat the plants, trees and soil correctly to help everything thrive. Would you be able to direct me to any beginner's posts, blogs books, classes, videos you consider helpful? I'm grateful for any guidance! Thank you very much for your time.

Ooh that is quite exciting! I will provide you with some links to more information on the basics, but feel free to ask specific questions if you have any.

Vegetable Gardening:
This is my favorite gardening information page. It includes recommendations and temperature preferences for plants, spacing suggestions, days until germination, etc: Here is another page with the same information, applied to a sample planting guide:

Mulch for Vegetable Gardens:
Note* If you choose to use black plastic for your vegetable garden, I would highly recommend picking it back up at the end of the year.

Fire Blight (common disease of apples and pears - should be pruned out):

Hail Protection & Low Tunnels:

Watering Mature Shade trees:
Science of Planting trees (*reading through this before planting can prevent a lot of problems down the road):

Feel feel to browse this page for more information:

Lastly, if you are interested in getting a good background in gardening (vegetables, flowers, trees, etc), you might consider the Master Gardener Program.

Wow! I can't thank you enough for all of this wonderful info. We are about to move in and I'm sure I'll have some more specific questions very soon.
I would definitely be interested in the master gardening program in the future. I will take a look!
Really appreciate all your help.
