Late season apple thinning
Asked July 28, 2019, 10:37 PM EDT
I thinned my apples early in the year but missed many I should have thinned. If I thin them now in late July will it help the remaining apples grow bigger?
Benton County Oregon
In order to gain the benefits of thinning the fruit -- large, high quality fruit -- the excess fruits should be removed when they are the size of olives.
Thinning this late in the season (late July) won't help size up the remaining fruits but may avoid the loss of heavily-weighted branches.
