Old unused canning lids

Asked July 28, 2019, 1:05 AM EDT

We recently bought a house where a lot of things where left in storage sheds. I came upon a crate full of old unused canning lids. Maybe as old as 20 or 30 years old by the price tags on them. Is it safe to use these lids?

What a great find -- but it is not recommended to use old canning lids if they are many years old because they will not be safe. The gasket compound may have broken down and you will not be able to guarantee a safe seal.

If you have other questions, Oregon State University Extension Service offers a food preservation and safety hotline every year during the peak canning season. The hotline is available for queries on proper canning techniques, safe recipes to follow, and the locations for pressure canner gauge testing in your area. The toll-free hotline (800-354-7319) is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (July 15th - October 18th). Extension certified Master Food Preserver volunteers from Lane and Douglas counties take the calls.
