Annual. Some over 6 feet tall. Thick base. Pulls up easily. Reseeds itself. When tapped after flowering the seeds pop (like the sound of popping corn) Invasive? No matter what, I love it.

This is a serious noxious weed - very, very invasive!! It is called Policeman's Helmet (Impatiens glandulifera). The Oregon Department of Agriculture has listed it as a Class B Noxious Weed. You should pull all of them immediately and dispose of them in the garbage. Do not compost the plants or seeds. Do not let them go to seed. Land conservancies and other land managers are going to great lengths to remove this significant invasive plant from Oregon lands. Please do not help this plant spread!!
Here is the weed profile from the Oregon Department of Agriculture.

P.S.

If you like the look of policeman's helmet, consider one of the non-invasive options on page 37 of Garden Smart Oregon: https://www.nature.org/media/oregon/gardensmart-rev-2010.pdf

As a past steward of natural lands, I like to share this resource so folks know there are wonderful alternatives to the invasive plants that threaten gardens, farms and nature. A vast majority of noxious weeds were once someone's favorite garden plant.

Another great resource for dealing with weeds and learning about healthy land management is your local Soil and Water Conservation District. Find them here: http://www.lincolnswcd.org/
