The plant in the photo is known as viper's bugloss or blueweed (Echium vulgare). This is a biennial species that is introduced to Michigan. As a biennial, it spends its first year of life as a low growing rosette. In the second year, it produces the upright portion with flower, as you are seeing now. These same plants will not likely survive another year though you may get additional plants coming up from seed. Many people view this plant as a weed due to the spiny hairs covering the plant.
