How do I safely move mining bees? I found some nesting in the dirt of a retaining wall I’m currently building. In a few weeks, those holes are going to be a foot or more under gravel. I don’t want them to die and I don’t know how to safely move them in time to relocate and rebuild before it’s too late.

Good job in identifying these as ground nesting bee entrances. Unfortunately, there is no way to move these nests after they have been started. Fortunately, most of the ground nesting bees are common and this kind of disturbance (which is always happening in the landscape, even in natural systems) should not have a major impact on the pollination. Keep up the good work with planting bee-attractive flowers in your landscapes and these bees will make up the difference in the future.
