Round up sprayed vegetable garden

Asked July 16, 2019, 6:52 PM EDT

Well the community property next to mine sprayed Roundup under the trees about 50 feet away from my garden and uphill. Will my vegetables be affected and would rain wash it down to my garden?

Will County Illinois glyphosate

Thank you for your question. Here is a fact sheet on glyphosate, the active chemical in Roundup: http://npic.orst.edu/factsheets/glyphogen.html As you can read, once it lands on the plant and soil, it binds tightly to the soil, so is unlikely to wash away. The major risk to your garden was when it was being applied, and if the wind carried it over to your plants. This is described here: https://extension.psu.edu/herbicide-drift-and-drift-related-damage You will know if it contaminated your garden if the plants die, obviously, but look out for unusual growth resulting in ‘zombie’ leaves, stems and flowers. Good luck!
