Dead evergreen, literally overnight

What would cause an evergreen tree to die in literally one day?! One day it looked just like the one on the right. The next day, this....

When a mature plant appears to die very suddenly, it has typically been in decline for some time and then it hits a "tipping point" -- such as the very hot weather we're having -- and then you see the sudden change in appearance. When a whole plant is affected like this, it is typically the result of damage to the root system or the trunk. It is certainly unfortunate; there is nothing you can do but replace the plant.
