When and how often to water flower beds

Asked July 14, 2019, 7:47 PM EDT

Hello, I would like to know how soon after a major thunderstorm (like we had last week) I should water my flower beds and how often I should be watering them in July-August. Thank you for your advice!

Frequency of watering will vary based on weather conditions, soil type, and even the needs of different types of plants. Watering deeply and infrequently is better than frequent shallow waterings (to keep your roots from growing too close to the soil surface). In July-August, you may need to water deeply at least twice each week for established plants. New plants or seedlings may need more frequent watering as their root systems get established.

Using a mulch layer at the base of your plants will help to retain moisture and reduce watering frequency. https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/mulch
