Pine Tree Under stress

Asked July 14, 2019, 7:18 PM EDT

Hello: Help I have attached several photos for your review. Also I noticed brown powder on the branches & base of the tree. Maybe it is a beetle problem. If so how do I get rid of them ? It is a big tree. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Best Regards, Sam Gupta

Unfortunately, white pines are susceptible to a number of different problems that are contributing to decline of this particular species. I do see evidence of beetle damage in your photos of the branches/trunk. Beetles are attracted to trees that are stressed by environmental factors and/or disease pressures. See the following article about dieback of Eastern white pines, which is attributed to pathogens, pests, and a changing climate. https://ag.umass.edu/landscape/fact-sheets/dieback-of-eastern-white-pine

If the tree is important to you, you do have the option to have it assessed by a certified arborist. You can find one using the following page, http://www.treesaregood.org/. Eventually, however, it will need to be removed and replaced. This article can be helpful in making that determination. https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/how-do-you-decide-when-remove-tree
