Patch of Wheat

Asked July 11, 2019, 6:28 PM EDT

Hi! We just bought an old abandoned farm outside of Dallas. As we were pacing our fence line for horses, we discovered about 70’x70’ of bearded wheat. (And a little oats.) Is this ok to have in the horse pasture? Thanks, Jody

I can foresee a couple of issues. first, the awns on the wheat (beards) can cause eye problems if the horses graze the wheat. Second, the grain is probably starting to mature. that would be quite a bit of wheat if the horses decided to eat it all at once.
