RatX ingredients?

Asked July 11, 2019, 12:01 AM EDT

Hi, I wondered if you have any experience with this product: https://www.ecoclearproducts.com/collections/ratx/products/ratxa%C2%AE-pellets Corn gluten meal 55% and salt (sodium chloride) 2%. I need to use this outdoors, so I assume squirrels, chipmunks and other rodents would be effected as well. I'm also doubtful animals that might eat the dead rats wouldn't be harmed. I just want to use something that won't hurt wildlife. Thank you in advance, Anne Woods

Hello Anne,
Thanks for your question. You are correct in thinking that other rodents (squirrels, etc.) are likely to be affected the same way as rats, if they eat similar amounts of the bait. I hope you can use crafty placement to minimize that risk.

The risk for scavengers and predators, when eating the dead/dying rats is likely to be low. The bait is 2% salt, and the animal will have a far lower concentration of salt. Wild predators often avoid eating the stomachs of their prey, but domestic pets are more likely to eat them.

If you choose to use this product, be sure to follow the label directions. Monitor the rats' activity so you can place the bait in locations that are more accessible and attractive to rats than other species. Consider looking for water sources, and fixing leaks. Rats must have water daily, and they will leave if they can't find it.
