Pear Tree Leaves are Black and Curling Up

Asked July 10, 2019, 7:46 PM EDT

I'm wondering what could be causing the leaves on our pear tree to turn black and curl up. This isn't happening all over, but on several of the branches. Is this fixable, or is our tree dying? It always blossoms but hasn't produced fruit yet.

Thank you for the question. Fire blight, a bacterial disease, is the main disease affecting pear trees and your tree looks like it might be suffering from it. It can kill the tree and is a difficult disease to manage. You may want to have a certified arborist come and look because diagnosing from a photograph has its limits. On a separate note, it takes 2 varieties of pears to produce fruit and it takes 3-10 years before a pear tree begins to bear fruit.
