Can I transplant grasses at this time of year?

Dakota County Minnesota

Thank you for the question. You can transplant perennial grasses now but it may be difficult due to the amount of leaf growth. You will also need to "baby" them along the rest of the season with additional watering when weather conditions are dry. Grasses, especially native grasses, can take a full season to fully establish a good root system so water them until the soil freezes.
The best time to do it is in early spring before growth starts.

Thank you for contacting Extension.
