Baby birds in nest at night but no mom or dad in the nest

Asked July 8, 2019, 12:42 AM EDT

I have a Carolina wren nest and has 4 babies in it. I've kept my eye on the nest bc snakes are bad here. Tonight I get home from being gone for a few days and her 4 babies are in the nest but no mom or dad on the nest is this normal?

Carolina wrens may not sit on the nest in hot weather. Babies might become overheated if a parent sat on the nest. When the babies gain feathers, sitting on the nest may not be necessary for their survival. Sometimes nests are abandoned for unknown reasons, but as long as the babies are being fed, they should be fine.
