Basil leaves being eaten by something

Asked July 7, 2019, 5:07 PM EDT

I've attached a photo of basil leaves from two plants in pots in my patio. What can I do to get rid of whatever is eating them, and more important, is it safe to eat the leaves uncooked, say in pesto, or cooked?

Hi- we can't tell you what pest was feeding on your basil. Slugs, cutworms, and grasshoppers are some possible culprits. The raggedness of the leaf injury would make grasshoppers the more likely culprit. Keep checking for signs of what it is that's feeding on your basil. You could cover the plants with tulle or a fine mesh insect netting.

It's safe to eat the leaves that are damaged- cooked or uncooked.
