proper tulip bulb storage until fall

Asked July 6, 2019, 1:28 PM EDT

We've been given a bag of tulips and need to know how to properly store them so they'll still be viable when we're finally able to plant them this fall. We live in Brooklyn Park, Hennepin Co. Thank you! Pat Canby

This is more difficult than you might expect. Store them in a cool, dry place in a bag with lots of air circulation, and check them often for any molding or rotting. Unfortunately, the gas emitted by certain vegetables affects the bulbs, so the refrigerator is not a good idea (unless you have an extra refrigerator). And basements and garages are often too warm. Which is why we usually store tulip bulbs in the ground.
