a squash like vine emerged, uninvited, in my garden this year. It is doing well and producing fruit, but I haven't been able to figure out its identity,

Hi- this appears to be an immature butternut squash. However, since it popped up in your garden there is also the slim possibility that it's a cross between butternut and another member of the Cucurbita moschata species. You'll know for sure when it reaches maturity. Regardless, it's edible.
