Hosta Virus X

Asked July 2, 2019, 10:49 AM EDT

I am disappointed that a search on your website does not mention Hosta Virus X (HVX) It really is important to educate gardeners about the importance of disinfecting tools and what to look for to identify an infected plant. Hostas are known as the friendship plant and are readily split and shared. Doing so with contaminated equipment can devastate the garden of the giver and receivers :( Please add this information and photos on how to id. I have lost over 2 dozen plants to the disease before I was educated. It is a shame.

Thank you for the comment. I took a look for myself under our section "What's wrong with my plant" and found this link under the malformed or distorted leaves symptom: http://apps.extension.umn.edu/garden/diagnose/plant/annualperennial/hosta/leavesmalformed.html You can click on the link to learn more about hosta virus and it takes you to an excellent publication written by our colleagues at Wisconsin Extension: https://hort.extension.wisc.edu/articles/hosta-virus-x/

I hope this is helpful.

Thank you for contacting Extension.
