Starting lawn over from scratch

Asked July 1, 2019, 1:32 PM EDT

Hello! I have a lawn that is located in Wright county and has been invaded by Bent grass, at least that's what I think. I have read you will need to kill off the whole area to prevent the bent grass from returning. This lawn is 20+ years old and has grown fairly well. If I round up the lawn and then till it to six inches or so will that be good?

In the past, killing the existing turf and starting over was the usual way to eliminate bentgrass. This method still works but a chemical called Tenacity can now be used to do the job without killing the existing turf. The following bulletin explains how to do that.

The following information will be useful if you decide to start over:

Late summer through early fall is the best time to do the work.
