Brown spots on toad lily

Asked June 28, 2019, 6:17 PM EDT

I have a 3 year old toad lily that is lush and flowers, but always gets brown spots on the leaves about mid summer. The spots really detract from the appearance of the plant. It is in a shady area protected area next to my front porch. Last year I tried spraying the plant liberally with neem oil, to no avail. This photo shows the very early stage of the brown.....it is very defined by the end of July.

Hello,

Browning is caused by periods of dry soil and anthracnose, a fungal disease. Here are articles describing these issues-

The second link lists varieties that are anthracnose resistant. Keep leaves dry as possible when watering. Cleanup debris in fall, and clip damaged leaves and discard.

Your leaves are at a good stage to send in samples and get the lab to look at them under a microscope, and give a positive ID, if you like. Https://pestid.msu.edu
