Will bronze birch bores damage downed birch?

Asked June 28, 2019, 4:44 PM EDT

i took down a birch that had bores in it, and salvaged lumber for future woodworking projects. will the bores still damage the timber or do they only eat live trees? What is a good method to ensure not transporting bores if the down timber is moved?

The bronze birch borer only attacks live trees. Also, they do not burrow deeply into the wood, they feed on the cambium or inner bark just on the outer surface of the wood. I suggest that you remove the bark from your timber before transporting it; this will dry out the cambium and kill any larvae that may still be present in the wood.
