Best Evergreen Tree For My Property

Asked June 25, 2019, 12:25 PM EDT

HELP!! We live in zone 6-7 with our soil being salty, alkaline, hard clay, poor drainage, long periods of drought, soggy in spring, dry / drought all summer and full sun. We would like to plant fast growing evergreen trees as a wind breaker.
What are my options ( if I have any)?

Salt Lake County Utah

Pines and junipers are the toughest evergreens. Avoid true firs and spruces, except Spanish fir (Abies pinsapo), which is pretty tough. The conditions you describe will not lead to fast growth in any tree species, but for adequate growth and survival, the tougher the better. I suggest that you go to our Tree Browser website at www.treebrowser.org to read about and see photos of these trees (and others). It also has a feature where you can select from 21 characteristics and narrow down the list of 245 species to just those that meet those criteria.

Good luck.
