How to properly finish a large diameter pruning cut.

Asked June 18, 2019, 10:00 PM EDT

Unfortunately, I had to take a section of my Hemlock out. The attached pictures show the stump that is left. Said stump is about 30 inches in diameter. How would I properly finish this? Should I cut it on a angle? Should I dress it with some sort of something or leave it heal on its own? Thanks for any input.

Take a look at our pruning publication for more information. Go to page 2 Diagram and page 3 for information on pruning large branches. It is a 3 cut pruning process. Do not cut flush with the trunk and no pruning paint is required.
