White fungus on oak

Asked June 14, 2019, 7:55 PM EDT

This oak in my yard has suddenly had a lot of white fungus growing in a crack up the trunk. Any idea what it might be and do I need to do something to treat it?

This wet weather we are having has a lot of different fungal organisms sending out all sorts of fruiting bodies. I can't tell from your picture if the fungal growth you are seeing is benign or an indication that the tree's interior is infected and this might weaken or kill the tree. I would have an arborist come and look at it and determine if this is just surficial or if the fungus has invaded the tree through the crack and if so, what would they suggest doing.
