What tree is this and how big will it grow?

Asked June 14, 2019, 5:18 PM EDT

We were given some saplings in 4/2018 and planted them in our raised bed. both have excelled and look very healthy but we do not know what they are nor where they need to be transplanted. Can you tell us what they are, how big they will get and how sun/shade tolerant they are??

Anne Arundel County Maryland

This is a spruce tree sapling. There are several types of spruces that are commonly planted -- Colorado spruce, Norway spruce, Oriental, Serbian, and white spruce, etc. We are not able to identify the species from your photo, as there are many different varieties/cultivars. In general, spruces are large trees; they can get up to 60 feet high with a spread of 20-30 feet. Spruces prefer moderately moist, well-draining soil in a location with full sun. They generally prefer a cooler climate than what we have here in Maryland.
