Replacing English ivy on Bank

Asked June 14, 2019, 10:38 AM EDT

What is the best thing to plant on a bank to stabilize it? I'm currently pulling up English ivy but don't want to get rid of all of it until I have something to replace it with.

There are several native plant alternatives to English ivy that are suitable for bank stabilization. Take a look at this excellent publication from the Virginia Native Plant Society. It discusses English ivy removal and several replacement options -- which depend on the site conditions you have and the goals you want to achieve. https://vnps.org/download/vnps/vnps_brochures/Alternatives-to-English-Ivy.pdf

You did not mention if your slope gets full sun or shade. We have lists of options for both situations on the following pages.
