Yellowing plum tree

Asked June 14, 2019, 9:13 AM EDT

Hello, we planted a plum tree in 2016. It has done beautifully and even produced two little plums last year. This year, it bloomed nicely and filled out with leaves. Now ING he past couple of weeks, there are yellow leaves and it seems to be thinning out so we are worried. I couldn’t find an answer that seems to fit with my searches. We haven’t watered or fertilized. It seems to have decently moist soil with the rain and weather we’ve had. Thank you so much.

Extreme cold that Minnesota experienced in late January has taken a toll on many plants. Evidence of this is widespread. Those planted recently are more likely to be damaged than those that are well established. You plum tree may be among those affected.

If that's the case, watchful waiting is warranted. Trees damaged by severe cold sometimes recover. The tree's prospects may be more apparent by mid- to late- summer.
