Junipers browning from top, bugs clicking now

Asked June 12, 2019, 12:58 PM EDT

What is causing some of our Juniper trees to brown from the top? Sometimes just one side. We are up Juniper Canyon just past the church. Seems to be happening to a lot of trees up here. What bugs are making the clicking sounds now. It is like a chorus of clicking bugs. I don’t remember this happening in the four years we have been here. Thank You

Hello, we've seen some branch, top and whole tree dieback in Juniper in Eastern Oregon. We believe the key is our severe drought over the past several years. However, this recent article in the Bend Bulletin flushes it out a bit:

the clicking sound may be wood boring beetles in the dead trees, they can make a sound when chewing on wood!!
