planting cool weather grass

Asked June 10, 2019, 10:22 PM EDT

Hi! I actually live further north in Washington state and am wondering when is the best time to plant cool weather grass for our region? I heard I am to plant grass seed at least 45 days before the first frost in the Fall. Do you have any estimates on when that first frost will hit? Bremerton, Washington Thank you!

Thank you for your question. Your state’s Extension service is a better resource than Oregon, and here is a WSU article that may help: http://cru.cahe.wsu.edu/CEPublications/eb0482/eb0482E.pdf You can find frost dates here: https://www.plantmaps.com/interactive-washington-last-frost-date-map.php Good luck!

Thank you, Kristena! I went to Washington’s extension service heading first but the program said that Washington doesn’t have a group that answers questions on this website, so I figured Oregon is close-ish! :) That packet is very helpful, and I’m reading through it, but I’m wondering, do you have the link for the first frost by chance? That map only had the last frost of the season...Thank you for all your help!

Here is a website with the first frost dates, but it is not a USDA site, so may be less reliable than a government resource: http://www.webgrower.com/regional/frost-pdf/WA.pdf

Thank you so much! That helps a lot! I appreciate it! :)
