Dying potato plants

Asked June 9, 2019, 12:54 PM EDT

I am growing red potatoes in plastic troughs with drain holes. The leaves have brown spots, are turning yellowish and curling brown on the edges. Some of the plants have died. Any suggestions to save them?

Hi- the spots could be caused by one of the leaf spot diseases, such as early blight. The browning and curling sounds like it could be leafhopper feeding injury. Neem oil is a relatively effective organic control for this pest. If you touch the leaves you will see very small, pale green, wedge shape insects flying.

There could be other environmental factors- sunlight, excess water or not enough water, low fertility, etc. that may be contributing to the problems you are seeing.
