Marigold mishap

Asked June 8, 2019, 9:25 AM EDT

I planted a border of French marigold about 2 weeks ago. This morning it appears that the flowers were eaten off the plants and scattered around in the dirt. I live in the city and there are a lot of rabbits around, but I have never had a problem with them disturbing marigolds. What could be eating them?

The culprit is probably a juvenile squirrel. They are destructive and a terrible nuisance, They tend to dig wherever there is fresh dirt because they want to see what was buried. From my experience I dig they dig. I regularly came home from work to find a newly planted perennial dug up and cooking in the sun. Bunnies and cats will bite off flowers but usually don’t dig them up.
