14 yr old red maple with verticillium

Asked June 1, 2019, 12:06 PM EDT

I believe my red maple has this wilt. I want to try and save my tree and I'm will to do the work. After pruning dead branches (do you prune the ones that are sprouting new leaves?) What is best fungicide to help tree win this battle?

Ellis County Texas maple trees verticillium wilt

Thank you for your question. Have you had testing to ensure that your tree has verticillium wilt, and not any of the other diseases maple trees contract, as described here: https://plantdiseasehandbook.tamu.edu/landscaping/trees/maple/ If it is VC, it is incurable in a tree of this age. You do not have to prune off branches with new foliage, but it is just a matter of time before those branches die, as well. Since the fungus is in the soil, there are no effective fungicides. But, I suggest you contact your county Extension office directly for advice on how to proceed. Here is their webpage: https://ellis.agrilife.org/ Good luck!
