Fir, spruce or pine

Asked May 30, 2019, 3:26 PM EDT

We have 3 blue spruce, about 13 yrs. old, which will need to be cut down due to development of a fungus which started about 2 yrs. ago. Wanted to know what is the best alternative conifers to plant in that area which are suited to Michigan. The area is located on the southeast area behind our house and between ours and neighbors house. Area gets evening west sun. We are close to Lake Mich. Thank you.

Your choice will be dependent on soil and hours of direct sun. Most will require a minimum of Six hours of direct sun. Bald Cypress, Concolor Fir, Swiss Stone Pine, and Serbian Spruce require only four hours minimum. Your trees should be compatible with your soil conditions, (pH, soil texture, soil moisture, etc.) .
