Bark on Dog Wood tree

A visitor to our home said our dogwood tree had a fungus growing on the bark and it would kill the tree. Please look at the attached image and let me know what I need to do

These are lichens which are not harmful to the plants. Lichens are algae and a fungus that combine to form the lichens. The algae provides the food for the fungus and the fungus provides a moist environment. Neither steals nutrients are grows through the bark. The bark is only the medium that they grown on.
