Magnolia hasn’t leafed out and it’s late May

My butterflies magnolia has plenty of fuzzy buds, but leaves have not emerged and it is late May... It was a very rough winter in MN and this magnolia tends to be on the late side, but this seems very late. The branches still bend easily - do not seem dry or brittle. This tree has never flowered as squirrels eat the buds before they bloom, so no indications from that. Is there a way to tell if the tree is still alive?

Supple branches is a positive sign. If the layer under the bark is green it is still alive. It has been cool, cloudy and wet this year and many trees have been slow to leaf out. I have a purple smoke bush that occasionally doesn’t leaf out until temps are in the 80’s or mid June, so I would be optimistic.
