Is ok to leave your computer in sleep mode with programs like chrome running?

Asked May 28, 2019, 5:37 PM EDT

My friends that are employed as technology professionals say this slows down your computer if you don’t close major programs like that in sleep mode. I’m relatively tech savvy and this makes senses to me. My mom, less tech savvy but not illiterate, doesn’t believe me. Please cite a source. Thanks.

Following are a couple of articles from our IT Department. Thank you!

The first one, by AVG which is a well-respected IT company I think does a good job at the very end with their reasoning.

“Technically, when you put your PC or Mac into Sleep mode, a part of it will continue to run. In theory, this becomes part of the wear and tear of any piece of machinery that runs, but the real impact here is so low that you don’t need to worry about it. Using your laptop on a daily basis will contribute far more to component wear than any sleep mode could so you shouldn’t worry about it. Of course, shutting down and hibernating are the options with literal no wear.”

Another good, however a bit older article you can read, again, by another trusted source is here:
