We have a 40+ year old Norway maple. some of its major branches have died. Can we cut back the live branches (and remove the dead ones) and get new growth?

A 40 foot Norway maple is pretty large. Dead wood can be pruned at any time. If the tree requires additional pruning or thinning this should be in the dormant season. Contact a certified arborist regarding the health of the tree, pruning, and the best way to proceed.
